Description

Introduction to Mechatronics Engineering as a discipline. Fundamentals of sensors, actuators, instrumentation, and control systems. Engineering design and tools including engineering drawing, CAD, circuit simulation, and PCB design.

This whole-year course serves as a foundation for the three professional years’ training in Mechatronics engineering. It covers important topics of mechatronics systems in terms of mechatronics components, design, electronics and control. The outline of this course is as follows:

• Introduction to Mechatronics
• Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)
• Mechatronics components: inputs, outputs, sensors, actuators, mechanisms, motion,
• Computer-Aided Design (CAD): SolidWorks
• Computer Numerical Control (CNC)
• Electrical circuit analysis, instrumentation.
• Electrical schematic capture, circuit simulation & PCB design
• Introduction to control and system modelling

This introductory course with balanced ingredients aims to equip the students with baseline knowledge about mechatronics systems, and basic mechatronics design skills. Emphasis is placed on “Learning by Doing” through:

• a series of laboratory exercises on PLC programming, sensors, actuators and control;
• a series of essential tutorials on circuit analysis;
• laboratories and assignments for mechanical and electrical Computer-Aided Design; and
• a team design project on Elevator Control using PLC.

Students are guided to think “mechatronically”; linking component technologies to integrated mechatronics systems, and theories to applications.
