Description

Projection theory, visualisation techniques, orthographic drawing, introduction to a modern CAD package.

Learning Outcomes

Course topics: with Learning Objectives (and Washington Accord (WA) and UC Graduate Attributes) identified;

1. Introduction to design and the design process
1.1. An understanding of design, and the design process (WA1)
2. Projection theory and descriptive geometry (design-shape analysis)
2.1. An understanding of mechanical engineering components and how those components combine to carry structural loads, transmit motion and energy, and work effectively as an assembly (WA1)
3. Engineering drawing
3.1. Engineering sketching and drawing skills (WA1)
3.2. Visualisation skills to grasp 3-D thinking tasks, projections and sectional views (WA1)
4. Creative design (The WARMAN competition)
4.1. Skills in concept generation (WA2, EIE3)
4.2. Teamwork functionality (WA9)
5. Anatomy of Engineering (Lab Classes)
5.1. An appreciation of methods for systematic design concept selection
6. CAD (Computer Aided Drawing)
6.1. Competent use of SolidWorks CAD software to produce robust solid modelled parts, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings (WA5, EIE4)
7. Writing skills for engineers (Mechanical Engineering students only)
7.1. Effective communication via email (WA10, EIE2, EIE4)
7.2. A basic understanding of formal language and report format expectations for engineers (WA10, EIE2, EIE4)

Pre-requisites

Subject to the approval of the Dean of Engineering and Forestry. PROD110 Introduction to Product Design is accepted as an alternative to ENGR101 Foundations of Engineering.
