Description

Engineering biochemistry covering enzyme kinetics, metabolism and applied molecular biology.

Biochemical engineering, cell organelles, enzymes, metabolism and metabolic engineering (ME); genetic engineering (GE), GE Medical and industrial applications, molecular biology for bioprocessing; industrial microbioly, bioproducts, and bioreactors.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students should be conversant in the language of biology and biochemistry, and understand the how to grow and manipulate biological systems to produce useful commercial materials or consume chemical wastes.

After completing this course, students will understand 'upstream' bioprocess engineering issues and applications. Students are expected to be able to:
  • Understand the language of biology and biochemistry.
  • Understand different tools that can be used to grow, regulate, manipulate and scale-up biological fermentations.
  • Understand different bioreactor configurations and their operation.
  • Understand microbial growth and enzyme kinetics.
  • Understand the importance of upstream bioprocess engineering to the production of different bioproducts and industrial applications.

Concerns
Students with concerns about the course should contact any of the lecturers listed above, or Carlo Carere, the Year 3 Director of Studies.

General Policies of the Department
Students may obtain the general policies of the University from the website. For example:

Special considerations: http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/study/special-consideration/

Academic Appeals of Assessments: Students with concerns about assessment processes or grades should be advised to speak first with the relevant lecturer. If the matter cannot be resolved, then the student should meet and discuss the matter with the Head of Department/School and thereafter follow the procedures outlined in the University procedures http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/media/documents/postgraduate-/Academic-Appeals-Grievances-Principles-Procedures.pdf  and regulations http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/regulations/general-regulations/academic-appeals-and-grievance-regulations/

Reconsideration of grades: If you are concerned that your final grade may be incorrect it is suggested (for CAPE) that you make an informal query to the course coordinator, but you may follow the official procedures: http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/study/examinations/result-dates-and-appeals/

Disabilities: http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/disability/

PRE-REQUISITES
ENCH281 or subject to approval of the 2nd Pro Director of Studies of Chemical and Process Engineering.

Additional Course Outline Information

Assessment and grading system

Students may apply for special consideration if their performance in an assessment worth 10% or more is affected by circumstances including illness, bereavement, and some sporting events. Please see http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/exams/ for more information or ask the course coordinator. If students are unable to complete assessment items worth less than 10% of the course, or feel that their performance was or could be impaired, they should contact the course coordinator for special consideration. Such requests should be made before the assessment completion date - requests after this time will only be considered under special circumstances. Students prevented by circumstances from completing the course after the final date for withdrawing, may apply for special consideration for late discontinuation of the course. Applications must be submitted to the Examinations Office within five days of the end of the main examination period for the semester.
