Description

Engineering biochemistry covering enzyme kinetics, metabolism and applied molecular biology.

Students should be conversant in the language of biology and biochemistry, and understand the how to grow and manipulate biological systems to produce useful commercial materials or consume chemical wastes.

Topics covered include biochemical engineering; bacterial, plant and animal cell culturing; enzymes, metabolism and metabolic engineering (ME); genetic engineering (GE), GE Medical and industrial applications, molecular biology for bioprocessing; industrial microbiology, bioproducts, and bioreactors

Learning Outcomes

  • After completing this course, students will understand 'upstream' bioprocess engineering issues and applications. Students are expected to be able to:

  • Understand the language of biology and biochemistry.

  • Understand different tools that can be used to grow, regulate, manipulate and scale-up biological fermentations.

  • Understand different bioreactor configurations and their operation.

  • Understand microbial growth and enzyme kinetics.

  • Understand the importance of upstream bioprocess engineering to the production of different bioproducts and industrial applications.

The materials to be taught will be selected from a number of references including recently published books and journal papers, and these references will be provided at the lectures.

Notes

This course is required for completion of the Bioprocess Engineering minor. It provides preparation for ENCH482 (Bioprocess Engineering 2). The prerequisite for this course is ENCH281.
