Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Describe basic networking concepts and techniques with particular emphasis on ARQ techniques and MAC protocols.
  • Encode and decode block and convolutional codes.
  • Analyze the distance and error correction capabilities of error control codes.
  • Represent the convolutional codes in terms of state diagrams and trellises.
  • Perform modulation and demodulation using PSK, QAM and FSK.
  • Calculate the error probability of various modulations including PSK and QAM.
  • Describe an OFDM system and design the structure, coding and modulation.
  • Describe spread spectrum technology in terms of block diagrams and equations.
  • Specify and analyze filtering and line coding specifications and requirements for digital transmission.
  • Develop equalization strategies and configurations for mitigating the effects of intersymbol interference in digital systems.
  • Develop an awareness of upcoming communications systems and their potential impact on New Zealand and internationally.
