Description

Semiconductor materials and devices. Radiofrequency devices: signal diodes and transistors. Power electronic devices: power diodes and transistors. Digital devices and circuits: CMOS devices, layout and fabrication principles. Optoelectronic devices: light-emitting diodes, laser diodes, solar cells.

This course covers:
• Semiconductors:  Energy Bands and Carrier Concentration
• Basic Properties of the pn Junction
• CMOS Semiconductor Devices and Circuits
• Optoelectronic Devices
• RF and Power Devices

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of this course the student will achieve:
  • Understanding of the electronic properties of semiconducting materials
  • Understand the range and types of semiconductor devices that are available, and their typical applications.
  • Be familiar with the concept of energy band diagrams to understand and engineer the behaviour of semiconductor devices.
  • Understand and analyse p-n junction diodes for rf and power electronics applications.
  • Understand and analyse bipolar junction transistors (and variants thereof) for RF and power electronics applications.
  • Understand and analyse field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) for digital switching applications.
  • Be introduced to design principles for CMOS logic circuits.
  • Be familiar with semiconductor devices used for optoelectronics applications (LEDs, laser diodes, solar cells).
