ENCI657: Habitation Systems for Extreme EnvironmentsThis is a post graduate course which provides an overview on some of the fundamental requirements for establishing and maintaining habitats in extreme environments. The extreme environments can range from long term submersibles through to Antarctic settlements and even Martian habitats. Topics will include: life support systems; fundamentals of ecosystem services; overview of human adaptation to extreme environments; development of technological life support systems; outpost establishment; use of alternative materials for construction; planetary and space fundamentals.
Subject to approval of the Head of Department.

The assessment for this paper will comprise three components: a research project based on the first block, an assignment on establishing pioneering outposts, and a take home exam/design project. - All assignments are to be done individually unless otherwise stated.- This course follows all departmental policies and procedures as stated in the Undergraduate Handbook and as modified this course outline. Please refer to the 2020 CNRE Undergraduate Handbook for all policies and procedures not explicitly listed here, including (but not limited to) the assignment of grades, missed coursework and appeals, use of calculators on tests and exams, special considerations/aegrotats, professional conduct, dishonest practice and plagiarism, and use of CNRE computing facilities.
Class notes and reference material will be supplied.
