Description

Modelling, analytical and numerical mathematics for solving chemical engineering problems, including algebraic systems, ordinary and partial differential equations, complex numbers, Fourier and Laplace transforms.

This is a compulsory course, which provides a basis for many other courses in chemical engineering.

This course covers the mathematical concepts for solving problems in different areas of chemical engineering with emphasis on numerical methods, data-analysis, data visualisation, workflow optimisation and documentation. In addition, contemporary methods and tools are introduced for solving typical chemical engineering problems.

Learning Outcomes

This course seeks to develop the following knowledge and skills in students:

Numerical analysis
Students will be able to set up and solve:
o linear algebraic equation systems
o non-linear algebraic equation systems
o ordinary differential equations systems (Euler’s and Heun’s method)

Multivariate calculus
Students will understand the physical meaning of some partial differential terms and will be able to simple manipulations such as the determination of directional derivatives.

Mathematics of complex numbers
Students will understand the concepts of Fourier series, Fourier transforms and be able to analyse data.

Python and Jupyter Notebook
Students will be able to:

o code the solution in Python.
o document the solution steps and discuss and present the results in Jupyter Notebooks.

Timetable Note

The course consists of three lectures (3x1h), one tutorial (1h) and one laboratory (2h) per week.

Attendance at all lectures and tutorials is highly encouraged.

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Final Exam 45%
Laboratories 10% Laboratories will be marked on attendance and completion of lab tasks. For each computer lab up to three marks will be given (1 - attended 2 - adequate attempt 3 - good achievement).
Notebook submissions 5% For three labs, students will be required to submit well-structured, functioning and well-documented notebooks. These will be worth up to 5%. If fewer than three labs are submitted, the marks will be reduced in proportion to the number submitted.
Test 31 Mar 2023 20%
Assignment 1 01 May 2023 10%
Assignment 2 01 Jun 2023 10%
