Description

An advanced study of theoretical and research-based foundations of specialist teaching relating to understanding, recognising, assessing and providing for learners who have complex educational needs.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this paper should be able to:

1. Critically examine theory, research and practice relevant to the field of learners with complex educational needs;
2. Apply specialist skills, values, attitudes, and practices needed for professionals to work with students who have complex educational needs including evidence based assessments and teaching strategies;
3. Demonstrate professional skills relating to evidence-based, reflective and ethical practice when working with children who have complex educational needs, their parents and other professionals;
4. Demonstrate an understanding of Māori and multicultural concepts and practices as they relate to students who have complex educational needs.

Prerequisites

A teaching qualification or entry at the discretion of the Dean of Education. RP: Experience working with students who have complex educational needs

This programme uses Moodle as the online learning environment.

Please note that this learning environment is not hosted via the websites of either
University (Stream at MU or Learn at UC) but is an independent website designed
specifically for this programme and hosted by a 3rd party provider contracted by the
Universities.

Students should submit assignments as outlined in the individual paper guidelines. Mostly, this will be able to be completed online. However in some circumstances paper copies may be required and submitted.

It is the responsibility of the students to check their Internet access and ability to submit their work via the online system.  Any technical difficulties should be notified well in advance of the due date so that assistance can be provided or alternative arrangements can be negotiated. (Students who have unreliable internet access are advised to attend to this early in the course to prevent last minute pressures.)
