Description

An examination of evidence-based professional practices in the area of Deaf and Hard of Hearing, including common professional practices of specialist teachers and other educational and health professionals involved in special and inclusive education.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this paper should be able to:

1. Analyse, synthesise and evaluate evidence-based practices in the field of Deaf Education in order to develop strategies and resources
2. Apply a collaborative and consultative model using evidenced-based practices from the field of Deaf education when working on programmes with other professionals, stakeholders, family, whānau and communities.
3. Demonstrate professional skills relating to learning with, from and about others as you engage in interprofessional case work in Deaf education.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of Deaf, Māori, Pasifika and multicultural practices as they relate to professional practice in the field of Deaf education.

Students are expected to actively engage in New Zealand Sign Language learning and are required to demonstrate their increased knowledge and skill in using NZSL prior to graduating from this course.

This programme uses Moodle as the online learning environment.

Please note that this learning environment is not hosted via the websites of either
University (Stream at MU or Learn at UC) but is an independent website designed
specifically for this programme and hosted by a 3rd party provider contracted by the
Universities.

Students should submit assignments as outlined in the individual paper guidelines. Mostly, this will be able to be completed online. However in some circumstances paper copies may be required and submitted.

It is the responsibility of the students to check their Internet access and ability to submit their work via the online system.  Any technical difficulties should be notified well in advance of the due date so that assistance can be provided or alternative arrangements can be negotiated. (Students who have unreliable internet access are advised to attend to this early in the course to prevent last minute pressures.) Important Regulations

11. Completion of Non-Academic Requirements
In order to graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching endorsed in Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a student must pass the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) with a minimum standard of Novice Plus.
