Te Pataka Reo o Tahu aims to develop a working knowledge of Matauraka Kai Tahu (purakau, mahika kai, noho marae, waiata, place-based pedagogy) and a higher level of proficiency in te reo Maori. (MM website, 2019).
This knowledge and development of pedagogical understandings will strengthen the ability of kaiako enrolled in the programme to work successfully in Maori Medium settings or in English Medium settings with a greater knowledge of te ao Maori, Ngai Tahutanga, and level of proficiency in te reo Maori.
On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Tuakiri - developing an understanding of the nature and significance of iwi identitymarkers, and strategies for sourcing reliable information.2. Reo Whakamihi - increasing kaiako capacity for composing and delivering appropriate informal and formal practices of acknowledgement while abiding by appropriate tikaka.3. Pūrākau - exploring iwi-specific storying, effective pedagogies for linking to all curriculum areas.4. Reo Tuawhiti - supporting quality language revitalisation practice and planning; co-creating a kete of rich language for inquiry, pastoral care, classroom management and learning activities.5. Passion Project - pursuing a personal inquiry project with a focus on transferring will add value to students’ own whānau and kura.
Students must attend one activity from each section.

Students are expected to attend all scheduled course sessions, actively engage with course content and actively participate in course activities, such as Zoom sessions, Adobe connect sessions and any other requirements specified by the course cooordaintor, in order to meet the learning outcomes of the course. Students are expected to notify lecturers prior to their absence with an explanation. Extended absences must be accompanied by a medical certificate or similar (as for aegrotat provisions).Students with less than 80% attendance are at risk of not meeting the criteria for seeking credit in the course. the course lecturer may require evidence that they have actively engaged with the content and activities of the missed sessions.Attendance evidenceOn Campus students –attendance and active participation at lectures, workshops, labs and/or Adobe Connect (webinar) sessions, accessing of ECHO360 recordings, completion of forum tasks and and other requirements specified by the course coordinator.

Work is assessed and moderated by both course lecturers and moderated by other senior academics in literacy.
Work handed in after the due date with no extension granted is considered late. Late work will be accepted up to one week after the due date. If, for any reason, you are having difficulty in keeping to the deadline for assignments, you must make contact via email with one of the course lecturers so that we can work with you as to what is possible and reasonable. Marks will be deducted for lateness. Lecturers reserve the right not to mark late work, and no work will be accepted after assignments have been returned.
All work submitted in this course would be completed using APA format and a high standard of academic writing is expected.Conduct as an educational professional is expected. Students are advised to familiarise themselves with learning online including UC Learn before the course starts.
Requests for extension should go in the first instance in writing to the lecturer responsible for the course. It is possible to have an extension of up to 2 weeks following the published date.
One resubmit is allowed for each assignment; however no grade higher than a C will be awarded to resubmitted work. Work that is to be resubmitted will be due one week after being returned to the student unless other arrangements are requested and granted by the lecturer.
Students may apply for special consideration if their performance in an assessment is affected by extenuating circumstances beyond their control, where:(a) they have suffered an acute illness, injury, or other reasonably unforeseeable circumstances:i. which has prevented them from completing any major item(s) of work for assessment in a course; orii. which has impaired their performance (including by interruption of pre-assessment revision) to the extent that the result(s) are likely to underestimate their true and evidenced level of mastery of the material in the course; or(b) i. they have been selected to perform, compete, adjudicate, or officiate as a national sporting representative at national or international competitions; orii. they are members of a national cultural group on tour nationally or internationally.Please note that applications must be supported by evidence. As well as attending classes, it is essential that all students regularly access the course Learn site. All course information such as the course kaupapa, notices, assessment information, required and recommended readings, audio recordings of some lectures, and other teaching resources etc. will be available on this site
Students will be expected to submit their assessments via the online assessment system in the Learn class site by 5.00pm on or before the due date. Assignments are automatically sent through Turnitin to check for Plagiarism on submission of assignments. submitting assignments for marking via the Learn site.It is the responsibility of the students to check their Internet access and ability to submit their work via the online system.
