Description

This course examines the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning in inclusive settings. Students will examine and critique current teaching and learning theory and practices as they pertain to inclusive and special education. Students will gain knowledge of and skills in a range of inclusive teaching and learning practices and processes within a framework of Universal Design for Learning.

The course begins with an introduction to Universal Design for Learning as a broad framework that supports inclusive practice. We then progress to examining a range of inclusive issues and strategies. These include, for example, working with support staff, inclusive communication, students learning with students, the role of individual education plans, nurture groups and the Index for Inclusion.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Develop and address significant questions and debates relevant to teaching and learning in inclusive education.
2. Review and critique literature relevant to the theory and research of teaching and learning in inclusive education.
3. Articulate and defend a personal philosophy of teaching and learning with respect to principles of inclusive education.
4. Understand and apply principles of Universal Design for Learning.
5. Critically analyse the educational impact on teaching and learning of different perspectives on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.

There are two formal assessment points over the duration of the course.
Assignment 1 takes the form of a written essay that explains and evaluates Universal Design for Learning and its relevance to inclusive education.
Assignment 2 is an evaluative report on an inclusive strategy or resource that supports the learning and well-being of pupils who may be considered ‘at-risk’ in the education system.
