Description

This course provides background concepts for utilising Geographic Information Systems in disaster risk and resilience situations and practice. Although the course assumes no background in GIS, it will progress relatively quickly in Term 4 after students have gained initial familiarity with GIS in Term 3.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students successfully completing this course will:

  • Have a clear understanding of the basics of coordinate systems, vector and raster spatial analysis, and data sources.
  • Understand the elements of cartography and visualisation of hazard and risk spatial information.
  • Understand the role of geospatial analysis in research and in practice;
  • Appreciate the role of spatial technologies in emergency and disaster response, and in disaster risk reduction.
  • Be able to approach disaster and resilience projects using multidisciplinary datasets to assess impacts and risk.
  • Be able to carry out a geospatial assessment within a specified geographic area addressing a specific topic, and integrate this into a literature review to produce reports.

Course Content
The course begins with an overview of GIS, coordinate systems, and the basics of generating spatial data. Students will be introduced to the wide variety of data sources available, the pros and cons of which will be discussed. Datasets used in the course will range from environmental, to infrastructure to socio-economic. The basics of vector and raster GIS analyses will be presented. A key focus will be cartography and how maps can be used to convey hazard, risk and uncertainty. The course is centred on the laboratories and assignments, and a valuable series of guest lectures from GIS practitioners is a highlight. Students will also have the opportunity to train in the disasters loss assessment software RiskScape.

Course Programme
The course comprises 12 weeks of classes. Classes will meet weekly for a 2 hour session. Laboratories are also held weekly for 3 hour sessions. Lecture sessions 1-6 will address coordinate systems, data sources, spatial analysis and cartography/visualization. Lecture sessions 6-12 will comprise guest lectures from GIS practitioners.

In addition, there will be a 2-day Riskscape workshop to be held. This will be scheduled approximately half way through the course, depending on Riskcape team availability.

The course is assessed by way of laboratory completion and 2 assignments.
