This course covers the development of statistical concepts and their application to complex systems.

This course provides an introduction to data science and lays the foundation for other data science courses. You will be gradually introduced to the R programming language to perform statistical computations.

The emphasis will be on you applying the relevant statistics to problems, selecting sensible techniques, following the methodology and interpreting the results.  Your understanding of the concepts and computer-based solutions is emphasised and applications to commerce, the social sciences, the humanities, science and engineering are considered.

You will cover topics that include data collection, sampling, data analysis, summary statistics, estimation, boot-strapping, statistical distributions, inference (including confidence intervals, hypothesis tests and modelling) and probability.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students that complete DATA401 will have:
  • A solid conceptual understanding of key data science concepts and techniques.
  • The ability and confidence to perform a basic analyses with data, including summarizing data, visualising data and making statistical inferences.
  • Experience using technology to perform data science procedures.
  • A solid statistical foundation for further study in data science.
