An introduction to Latin grammar and to reading Latin.
In this class students will learn the fundamental principles and rules of Latin grammar and develop the ability to read slightly adapted texts in ancient Latin. By learning Latin grammar students will also enhance their grammatical competence in English and, therefore, improve their ability to learn other languages. This course also prepares students to continue their study of Latin in CLAS145 Beginners Latin B, and to read unadapted Latin texts.Although Latin is commonly referred to as a dead language, in fact it lives on in English and the Romance languages, and it remains the official written and spoken language of the Vatican and the Catholic Church. In the sciences Latin informs technical terminology (for example, botanical names or anatomical parts) and the Romans, who spoke this language, have shaped much of the ways in which we think today. Distance students will have access to the same materials in Learn as the Campus students; in addition, they will have exclusive access to the “Distance Folder”. This folder includes lecture recordings designed to help you with content presented in each chaper, links to upload homework assignments, and links for the test and exam.
Students who pass this course will acquire:A basic knowledge of Latin grammar and inflections.Basic skills required for the translation of simple, edited ancient Latin texts.An insight into aspects of Roman history, literature, society and culture acquired by reading adapted Latin texts. Knowledge about the extent to which Latin is alive and well in modern European languages, English, and even some transliterated words in Māori.The knowledge required to begin CLAS 145 Beginners’ Latin B.Transferrable skills for future employment:A better knowledge of English grammar and a larger vocabulary in English.More disciplined study habits and better time management skills.Enhanced ability to memorize large quantities of material.
