Description

An introduction to Latin grammar and to reading Latin.

In this class students will learn the fundamental principles and rules of Latin grammar and develop the ability to read slightly adapted texts in ancient Latin. By learning Latin grammar students will also enhance their grammatical competence in English and, therefore, improve their ability to learn other languages. This course also prepares students to continue their study of Latin in CLAS145 Beginners Latin B, and to read unadapted Latin texts.

Although Latin is commonly referred to as a dead language, in fact it lives on in English and the Romance languages, and it remains the official written and spoken language of the Vatican and the Catholic Church. In the sciences Latin informs technical terminology (for example, botanical names or anatomical parts) and the Romans, who spoke this language, have shaped much of the ways in which we think today.

Distance students will have access to the same materials in Learn as the Campus students; in addition, they will have exclusive access to the “Distance Folder”. This folder includes lecture recordings designed to help you with content presented in each chaper, links to upload homework assignments, and links for the test and exam.
