Description

CHIN210 engages with the current academic trend of Sinophone studies in the global network. Separated from the traditional framework of China studies, Sinophone studies reconsiders the interconnectedness of China proper, its Autonomous Regions, and the overseas Sinophone communities with a focus on such topics as cultural history and landscape, cross-Strait relations, diaspora, postcolonialism, and globalisation.

Expectations
Students in this course are expected to:
• Attend all classes. Failure to do so will not only result in your falling behind but also hold back the class.
• Prepare for each lesson before coming to class, by going over the assigned materials.
• Take an active role in class discussion.
• Complete all the course work required for assessment independently, without the help of other people (See the section Dishonest Practice and Breach of Instructions below).
• Submit all the course work required for assessment on time.
• Check UC email and Learn regularly for course notices and updates.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of this course, each student will:
  • Develop a sophisticated understanding of Sinophone studies and of how it is perceived in the global network;
  • Identify the evolving cultural trends of Sinophone communities;
  • Show a cross-cultural view of the Sinophone world;
  • Develop a global awareness by connecting Sinophone communities with New Zealand and the rest of the world;
  • Be able to deploy organised ideas in presentation and participate in class discussions;
  • Demonstrate academic writing skills, including providing an argument, gathering and organizing second-handed resources, and analyzing materials closely and critically.

Prerequisites

Any 15 points at 100 level from CHIN, or
any 60 points at 100 level from the Schedule V of the BA.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
End-of-semester reflection/research paper 10% Each student must submit an end-of-semester reflection poster - 500 words for 200-level
Reading journals (10) 40% Each student needs to submit ten reading journals (summaries and responses). Each journal accounts for 5% of the final grade and should be a minimum of 300 words for CHIN210
Term tests (2) 50% Week 6 (20%) and Week 12 (30%)
