*Special Topic - Training and Development*Training is a systematic method of learning new skills, rules, concepts, or attitudes that can result in performance improvement. Development is the expansion of an individual’s capacity to function effectively in their present or future circumstances.In this postgraduate course, you will be learning about training and development in the context of employees in workplaces. We will review the theories, research, and practices behind adult learning, instructional design and delivery, and training evaluation. We will also discuss the role of human capital development for growth, innovation, and resilience in organisations, and explore contemporary means of fostering continuous learning in workplaces.There are three major assessments in the course: a peer learning presentation, a training facilitation, and an implementation plan. The training facilitation will be completed as collaborative teamwork (~3 students per team). Throughout the course, you will be reflecting on your learning of the topic. All assessments are designed to reinforce and expand your knowledge of research and practice in training and development.
At the end of the course, you will be able to:1. Develop and facilitate a training and development programme.2. Evaluate the learning progress and the utility of a training and development programme. 3. Articulate and support the respective responsibilities of both employees and employers in fostering the development of human capital.4. Critique current research in training and development and evaluate its generalisability to the Aotearoa New Zealand context.5. Exercise and adapt strategies for working in a diverse team, including efficient project coordination, routine communication, the delegation of work, and building team cohesion.

There is no textbook for this course. Each seminar meeting has a required reading list to guide your learning on a particular topic. Readings will be available on LEARN a week before its corresponding seminar. You will be expected to complete the readings and exercises before our seminar to prepare for the class discussion.
