This is an investigation into Calvin's views that was first sparked when the author, Alida Sewell, came across Calvin's use of the metaphor of the body being the prison house of the soul. It struck Sewell as Platonic rather than Christian. She investigated Calvin's writings as they referred to the body, medical theories as they were current, Calvin's experience of his own body, the image of God, marriage, sexuality, gender, nakedness, and how the body featured in his theology of creation, sin, and resurrection. All these issues are set in the context of Calvin's education and Renaissance culture.
