General image requirements

Images must be relevant

Images should be relevant to the content on the page and support its purpose. Images increase download time. Avoid adding images that don't add value to the page.

Tips and things to avoid when using images

  • A 1 px black border can be added to images.
  • Thumbnail images can link to bigger images or pages with information and bigger images, make sure linked images have 0 borders to avoid a blue hyperlink border appearing.
  • Make sure that 'Alt' tags are added to images as this improves accessibility.
  • Avoid animated gifs or moving images.
  • Ensure you have copyright clearance for an image.
  • Ensure you record and keep track of any copyright images you use including artist/agent, cost, usage licence and any ongoing costs such as yearly licenses.
