Getting started: create and format tables

Use these instructions together with the Web Style - tables guidelines. The style guide shows what the table styles look like and where to apply them. Use both and your tables are straightforward to make and edit. They will look good, be easy for people to read and display correctly across different web browsers.

Important notes before you get started

  • Keep tables simple. 'Less is more' when it comes to table styles
  • Never copy and paste a table in a Word document into Dreamweaver. You must always create a table in Dreamweaver and then add the data and content.
  • Tables are used for data that makes sense in tables. Tables should not be used to control page layout. Eg tables with only 1 cell, or to control layout with text and images (with the exception of people pages). See wrapping text around an image for instructions.

Create, style and change the properties of tables

If you haven't created a table before in Dreamweaver (or can't remember how) we recommend you work in the following order.

  1. Create a new table in Dreamweaver
Learn how to insert a table to your web page.
  2. Select your table and change its properties
Learn how to select and edit different parts of a table. At this step insert table content and get it displaying as you want it to look.
  3. Adding styles to a table
How you how to apply styles (or classes) to individual table elements.
