Create a new folder

This method uses the right click context menu for PC users, or ctrl+click for Mac users.

Before you start

Do not add multiple levels of folders because:
  • URLs become unnecessarily long
  • Over time your site will be come confusing and difficult to manage
  • It will be complex for you and those using your site
  • In the example below the highlighted 2008 folder (1) is inside the news folder (2), which is inside the top (or site) folder (3)
  • The 2008 folder is 2 levels down from the site folder
  • The URL for this is http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/web/news/2008/
  • It is rare for a site to need more than two levels down from the top (or site) folder

To create a new folder

Step 1 - make sure the Local Files panel is open

  • You should see the files you work on in the local files panel on the right side of Dreamweaver

  • If your local files panel is missing either select from the top window-files, or press the F8 key on your keyboard

Step 2 - close all folders in your site except the top one

  • It is easiest to work with only your site folder open (the top one) and all the others closed
  • Open folders have a minus sign beside them -
  • Closed folders have a plus sign beside them +

Step 3 - select where you want the new folder to be

  • It is important you understand where your new folder will end up. You need to carefully select where you want it to go
  • In the example below the top folder - the site folder for the whole Web Team site is selected. A new folder created here will appear inside this folder (not inside the other folders in the site)
  • The top folder or site folder is known as the root level of the site. A new folder at the root level of the site will be located at the same level as the archive, cis, discussion and graphics folders

  • In the example below the how folder is selected. This folder and those above and below it are located inside the site folder. A folder created here will appear in the highlighted how folder

Step 4 - create a new folder

  • Select the folder (or level) in your site where you want a new folder
  • If you want a new folder to appear directly inside the top (or site) folder, select it
  • If you want a new folder located inside another folder in your site, select it instead
  • With the folder selected right click - new folder
  • In the example below the new folder (1) will appear inside the how folder (2), and appear at the same level as the sitesetup folder (3)

  • The new folder appears inside the how folder at the bottom of the list of files

  • Once you click away the new folder moves either to the top of the file list (if there are no other folders) or, if there are other folders at the same level they listed alphabetically
  • In the example below there is one other folder at the same level (sitesetup). The new folder with the default title untitled is listed alphabetically beneath it

Step 5 - rename the folder

  • Edit the default name untitled and name it using best web practice
  • Select the folder and either right click-edit-rename, or press the F2 key on your keyboard
  • See name files and folders for help with naming best practice
  • In the example below the folder is renamed manage
  • Both the how and manage folders are shown in the open position. The how folder contains files and folders and the contents are connected by dotted lines. The manage folder is empty so there are no connecting dotted lines to files beneath it (but is connected back to the how folder where it is located)

The new folder is empty and there are no files within to duplicate, copy or 'save as'. To create new files use either:
