Getting started: creating new files and folders
At some point you will need to create new files or folders for your site. There are several ways to create a new file and one recommended method for creating a new folder. Think of them as:- Files are the web pages in your site
- Folders are the containers files are kept in (in the same way you use folders elsewhere on your computer, or for filing printed papers)
Only option for creating a new folder
Create a new folder
Makes use of the right click context menu (ctrl+click for Mac users) to create a new folder in the file panel.
Options for creating a new file
Method 1 - Use the file - new menu to create a new file
You must have Dreamweaver CS3 or CS4 to use this method. A new file is created from the 'file' menu at the top of Dreamweaver.
Method 2 - Use the right click menu to create a new file
Makes use of the right click context menu (ctrl+click for Mac users) to create a new file in the file panel.
Method 3 - Use duplicate or copy to create a new file
Duplicate or copy an existing file in the files panel to create a new file.
Method 4 - Use the file - save as menu to create a new file
Create a new file from an existing one by 'save as'.
Basic differences between the methods
There is no right or wrong method, but you cannot duplicate, copy or 'save as' if there is no existing file at the level where you want to create a new file.
All methods require you to be very careful with selecting where the new file will end up. Follow the instructions, take a methodical approach with attention to detail, and you will have no problems.
Methods 1 and 2
New files are created from scratch and are a 'blank canvas' as such. They come with default file names and file types you need to change. Because they are completely new your site's template must be applied to them. Don't be put off by this. It is a simple step.
Methods 3 and 4
New files are created from existing files. You don't apply a template but you need to delete existing content, rename the file and give it a new title. You need to take care with 'save as'. The new file must be at the same level of the site (ie inside the same folder) as the original file.
