You’re the CEO of entré – tell us about that!
It’s a student run company at UC. We have about a thousand members. Our goal is to foster students’ entrepreneurial spirit. We do that through our competitions and events.
What kind of competitions?
We have smaller competitions like the Napkin Challenge to spark ideas. We also have a big competition called the $85K Challenge. The entries are whittled down to 10 finalists who go through an incubator program where they create a business plan. Then they get judged in a ‘Dragons Den’ and from there we divvy up the $85,000 prize pool.
What do you like about being president?
I like helping other people get to where they want to go. Students often have great ideas but don't know how to start them up. We connect them with mentors who can help turn their ideas into reality. Of course, not everybody wants to be an entrepreneur, so the other thing we do is help students get job skills.
Tell us about the UCE Summer Start Up Scholarship you won.
It was a $5000 scholarship to start up a business. I went in with the concept of importing English country clothing. But after I did some research I realised that I may as well make my own. I went to Hong Kong to a massive buying fair, then talked to suppliers about what I wanted.
Where did that lead?
I started my own label called Hawthorn Country which I sell online. It's going well! It's been such a good learning experience. It taught me how to interact with other cultures and navigate the complexities of doing business.
Does being at UC help you build networks?
Through entré we create a lot of opportunities for students to engage and connect with our sponsors. They get to be part of the business community. On the exec team we get to do extra programmes, workshops and mentoring as well.
What’s your dream?
Ultimately I'd like to be the CEO of a big company. I’ve just been offered a job from an internship I did with BNZ. The entrepreneurial opportunities and real-world experience I’ve had at UC has really set me on my way.
