Helping the agricultural and industrial sectors enhance their management of water resources is the aim of a new research chair at UC funded by the Ashburton-based Mackenzie Charitable Foundation.

It has granted the University $1.3 million over five years to fund the work of the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation Chair in Freshwater Ecology.

Think like you mean business


A collaboration of UC, Lincoln and Otago universities will encourage bioscience students to think like entrepreneurs.

It is one of six projects involving staff from UC which have been awarded more than $6 million in the inaugural round of the Encouraging and Supporting Innovation Fund.

Wireless researchers getting connected 


The newly-appointed manager of NZi3’s Wireless Research Centre (WRC) is excited by the research and development opportunities offered by the ICT Innovation Institute’s collaborative approach.

The WRC is one of the key industry-based research themes within NZi3 (The NZ ICT Innovation Institute), with a focus on wireless communication. The aim of the centre, established with funding from the Tait Foundation, is to produce industry-led research, highly skilled graduates and expand the wireless community’s network of partners worldwide.

What does this button do? 


The Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HIT Lab NZ) has celebrated its fifth anniversary by announcing a change in its research direction.

Its Director Professor Mark Billinghurst says HIT Lab NZ has always been technology-driven, but will now move towards more “user-centred” development - looking at the wants and needs of users.

Answers blowing in the wind


UC research into the effect of complex terrain on wind which has implications for the aviation, horticulture and energy sectors has been recognised as one of the country’s research success stories of the past 10 years.

The Royal Society of New Zealand’s Focus on Research Excellence (FoRE) project says the investigation led by Professor Andy Sturman is also helping efforts to monitor and reduce air pollution.
