Busman's holiday for marketing student

30 UC marketing students spent the summer on the job as marketing interns at businesses and organisations around the country.

The College of Business and Economics internship programme gives students the opportunity to put classroom theory into practice.

This year UC's Facilities Management Department took on fourth-year student Kewin Boyer to develop a programme to encourage staff and students to use more sustainable modes of transport.

Kewin worked with UC's Sustainability Advocate Dr Kate Hewson to develop new initiatives to build on the successful bus, carpooling and cycling promotions of recent years.

“I had to look at the barriers that stop people from biking, walking, riding the bus or carpooling to get to Uni. There is no point forcing a mode of transport on people if the car is still the most convenient option for them. We need to look at how to facilitate that change by providing better services and raising awareness of the benefits of alternatives,” he says.

Two outcomes of the Kewin's work are the Turners Big Bike Auction on Saturday 3 March and a free $10 Top Up for students and staff using a Metrocard bus pass.
