Campus PlansUsers’ Perspectives of Non-Educational Facilities

Student focus groups were held in early March to investigate the kinds of retail facilities which are needed on campus, but the questionnaire quickly expanded to look at all facilities other than those for formal teaching. The focus groups were co-ordinated by Paul Ballantine and Paula Arbouw (Department of Management).

The main findings include:

  • Accessibility of many non-educational resources is poor, mainly due to a lack of knowledge about them
  • There is a need for meeting, eating and socialising places for students located more centrally than the UCSA
  • Improvements are needed in the provision of food on campus, recreational facilities, shelter and covered walkways
  • To many people the campus feels unsafe, particularly at night
  • A supermarket/grocery store/dairy is needed on campus
  • Carparking is problematic for all groups.
