Introduction
The Chinese programme at UC provides a wide range of courses in both the language and the studies of Chinese literature, thought, tradition, culture and society. It is backed by a strong staff team specialising in language, linguistics, literature, philosophy, film and culture.
The Chinese language courses aim to develop language competence in modern standard Chinese in both its spoken and written forms. Students also learn about aspects of Chinese history and culture in the course of their study.
There are two first-year language courses, one catering for beginners in Chinese and the other for students who have studied Chinese at high school. A first-year course in Chinese civilisation is also offered.
Recommended background
No previous knowledge of the Chinese language is required to study the introductory courses in Chinese language and civilisation.
Students who have studied Chinese as a subject at secondary school (Level 3 NCEA with 14 credits or above in Chinese or equivalent) may take CHIN 105.
CHIN 101 and CHIN 105 are not available to those who are literate in Chinese or who are fluent speakers of Mandarin. If in doubt, please contact the Chinese programme.
100-level courses
200-level and beyond
In the second and third years Chinese language courses provide additional grounding in the vocabulary and grammar of Chinese and further develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese. Teaching covers topics on Chinese culture, history and social life, so that at the same time as knowledge of the language is enhanced and vocabulary increased, an understanding of aspects of Chinese culture and Chinese people is acquired.
Other topics covered in second and third-year courses include Chinese society and culture, Chinese literature, Chinese film, business Chinese and Chinese linguistics.
Please note that CHIN 201 is for those with at least a C grade in CHIN 101 or CHIN 105 or equivalent. Some previous knowledge of Chinese or Linguistics is a prerequisite for students considering taking CHIN 202 Introduction to Chinese Linguistics.
Further study
The Bachelor of Arts with Honours programme in Chinese offers a wide variety of courses which deal with various aspects of Chinese language, literature and related topics. Postgraduate studies in Chinese may be taken to PhD level.
