Peer Learning Advisor (PLA)
Peer Learning Advisors are selected based on their academic writing skills, GPA and previous work experience. Candidates must successfully complete a written assessment to be considered for the role.
Peer Learning Advisors provide writing and study skills support to undergraduate, and occasionally postgraduate, students during one-to-one consultations at the Academic Skills Centre. PLAs advise students on analysing assignment tasks, structure, planning, referencing, grammar and style, time management, note taking and exam skills. PLAs undergo training based on the values of ako, aro and whanaungatanga.
Hours involved in the activity
3 modules of 12 hours each.
Every 12 hours of participation in an activity is equal to one intersection point (12 hours = 1 intersection point). For this activity you can claim a maximum of 3 learning and development outcomes.

- D1 - Communication - PLAs communicate effectively with students from a range of cultural and language backgrounds in an culturally responsive way.
- D2 - Initiative & enterprise - PLAs identify areas for improvement in the provision of ASC services for international students.
- D4 - Learning - PLAs undergo cultural competence training to identify their assumptions and learn how to support students from different cultural backgrounds.
- D6 - Problem solving - PLAs identify the specific needs of international and non-native English-speaking students and apply tailored solutions to enhance student learning.
- D7 - Self-management - PLAs manage their expectations and acknowledge their assumptions to meet the needs of students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- D8 - Teamwork - PLAs and ASC staff share knowledge to provide culturally responsive services for students.
