Researcher Summary

Research interests lie primarily in the field of international commercial dispute resolution. The title of my PhD thesis is ‘the development of commercial mediation in South Africa, in view of the experience in Europe, North America and Australia’. Following a detailed analysis of the relevant legislative and regulatory issues in the relevant jurisdictions, the thesis concludes with recommendations on the legal and regulatory regime required to facilitate the development of the commercial mediation process as a viable alternative to litigation and arbitration in South Africa. As the thesis is comparative and international, many of the conclusions reached transcend systemic differences and are applicable in jurisdictions and regions where commercial mediation is emerging as a viable alternative to litigation and arbitration.

Future research plans include the publication of further articles in leading peer-review journals and a book covering this emerging area of international commercial law.
