Scholarships

Selection process

Most scholarships are selected on the basis of the written application and the referee's reports. Some however, will require interviews. If an interview is required the scholarships office will notify you.

The selection process typically takes six to eight weeks but may take longer. All applicants will receive notification in writing once the outcome of the selection is final.

The Selection Committee

The composition of the Selection Committee varies according to the scholarship. Check the relevant regulations for the selection committee membership that applies to your scholarship.

Referees reports

This consists of a written statement regarding your abilities from a person(s) that you select. Academic referees do not need to be from the University of Canterbury, but may be any academic individual that you deem appropriate.

Ensure that referees write the name of the scholarship(s) that you are applying for on the form. It is also beneficial to provide your referees with the regulations for the scholarship for which you are applying.

It is your responsibility to ensure that referees reports are in by the due date. The Scholarships Office will not follow up referee reports that are incomplete or absent.

Undergraduate selection process

Undergraduate scholarships are generally competed for on the basis of academic merit, though some may specify other criteria, and are selected on the basis of the written applications. Some undergraduate scholarships involve interviews.

Postgraduate selection process

Applications for University of Canterbury Doctoral, Master's and International Doctoral Scholarships go through several stages before decisions are made. Applications that are supported by the Department are sent to Faculty for support and ranking. The Postgraduate Committee considers all the Faculty rankings and then determines the offers to be made for that round. Most postgraduate scholarships involve interviews of applicants.

Universities New Zealand (UNZ) Awards

Universities NZ applications are short listed by the University of Canterbury. Short listed applications are then forwarded to the UNZ where they compete against other applications from all over the country. The Scholarships Office will advise you whether or not your application has been forwarded to Wellington. If so, further communication will be from the Scholarships Manager at the UNZ.

Awards Offered by Outside Organisations

The Scholarships Office advertises some awards on behalf of other organisations. Please check the selection process directly with these organisations.
