Supervision and disputes

Supervision

You must have at least two supervisors. They are appointed when your research proposal is registered.

The Senior Supervisor must be a continuing academic staff member. Additional supervisors must have appropriate expertise and can be from:

  • UC
  • another university in New Zealand or overseas
  • from a research institute
  • from industry
  • somewhere else.

The Dean of Postgraduate Research appoints the senior supervisor on the recommendation of the Head of Department/Head of Studies (HOD/HOS). The HOD/HOS appoints the other(s) supervisor(s). Appointments are made in consultation with you and are formalised when you register your research proposal.

Also refer to the Theses Regulations in the Calendar (Publications website).

Once appointed

It is important to establish a clear understanding with your supervisor on the following issues:

  • the purpose(s) of your meetings
  • frequency of meetings
  • the type and extent of feedback and assistance which would be most useful
  • deadlines for submission of work

Disputes

If you are dissatisfied with the supervision provided or any other matter affecting your progress, you should report the matter to the Postgraduate Coordinator or the Head of your Department.

If you are still dissatisfied, you may take the matter to the Dean of Postgraduate Research.
