Examination and appeals
Examination process
Students should not contact the examiners during the marking process.
Once you have submitted your PhD thesis the following will happen:- Examiners will be appointed (one from another New Zealand university and another from overseas) by the Dean of Postgraduate Research who will consult your HOD/HOS.
- For students being examined under the old regulations (first enrolment prior to 1 December 2007), three examiners will be appointed: an overseas examiner, one from another NZ university and a UC examiner who will normally be from the supervisory team.
- The Senior Supervisor will submit a ‘Supervisor’s Certificate’ briefly outlining the part they played in the research and preparation of the thesis.
Timeframes
- The thesis will be sent to the examiners for marking once the Supervisor's Certificate and Examiners' Request forms have been received from the department.
- Reports are expected within two months of the examiners' receipt of the thesis.
- The reports are submitted to the Postgraduate Office and forwarded to the Dean of Postgraduate Research to approve progression to the the oral examination.
- The oral chair will proceed with organising the oral examination.
- Students are normally advised at the time of the oral of their results or, if changes are required advised of the timeframe and who has been named to verify emendations.
- Once required changes have been made to the thesis and accepted, an electronic and hard copy of the thesis are required to be deposited in the Library. For further information see the Library Thesis Portal (Library website)
