Field stations
UC is very strong in field-based sciences. The top Earth Scientists in the country teach and carry out research here (TEC, PBRF Report, 2006).
Of all universities in New Zealand, UC has the most extensive network of field stations for staff and students. These include stations at:
- Antarctica
- Cass (Inland Canterbury)
- Harihari (South Westland)
- Kaikoura (Marlborough Coast)
- Mt John Astronomical Research Facility (Tekapo, MacKenzie Basin, Canterbury)
- Westport (Buller, Westcoast)
- Snares Islands (Sub Antarctic)
In addition UC operates a field station in Nigeria as part of the Nigerian Montane Forest Project.
