Dr Malakai Koloamatangi, Senior Pacific Advisor (Acting Director MBC).

Dr Koloamatangi is the Director of the Office for Pacific Excellence at UC which has been commissioned by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ian Town to continue to oversee the implemention of the University of Canterbury's Pacific Plan.

The Pacific Development Team is part of the Office for Pacific Excellence and takes care of all aspects of Pacific student support on campus.

Dr Koloamatangi is now also the Acting Director of the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies and so has responsibility for both the Pacific Development Team and the Centre's strategic and operational overview.

Background

Prior to his new role at UC, Dr Koloamatangi joined the National Centre for Research on Europe in 2003 as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. He has taught at the University of Auckland, and worked for the New Zealand Parliamentary Services. He has also worked as a consultant and commentator on various issues in Pacific Island media in New Zealand and the Pacific.

As well as his extensive research interests, Dr Koloamatangi regularly contributes media commentary in both Australia and New Zealand on Pacific Island, particularly Tongan, issues. See the NCRE Media Log for links to articles and transcripts.
