On 22 February 2011, Christchurch, New Zealand's second-largest city, was hit by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake.
While parts of the city have been affected, the city as a whole continues to operate. Local business people have responded innovatively and created thriving entertainment, education and business hubs on the outskirts of the Central City.
Temporary repairs have been put in place ahead of a major rebuild of the city's wastewater networks and roads. To find out what's open visit http://www.whatsopen.co.nz/.
In spite of the earthquake, Christchurch is still the gateway to the South Island, and the home of new opportunities – find out all you need to know about Christchurch at http://www.christchurch.org.nz/.

Climate
Christchurch has a temperate climate with the full range of spectacular seasons. From hot, hot summers when nor'westers whip across the plains, to crisp winter days with clear blue skies (and great skiing), to awesome autumnal displays and fresh springs when the 'garden city' really lives up to its name, Christchurch is a city of colour and constant change.
Activities
Although Christchurch is known as an English city, with its gardens and punting on the Avon, it has a lot more to offer. There is always something going on.
For the sports minded, Christchurch is within easy reach of the great outdoors for climbing, tramping, mountain biking, skiing, sailing, surfing and much more.
