Scholarships funded by the New Zealand Government
Commonwealth Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available to graduates of Commonwealth countries under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan for Doctoral level study. Commonwealth Scholarships in New Zealand are administered by Universities New Zealand. Applications must be made in the first instance to the Commonwealth Scholarship agency in the country in which the applicant has his/her permanent home. Applications normally close in June for study commencing in the following year. Applicants are normally required to already hold an offer of place at a participating university when applying for the scholarship.
New Zealand Government scholarships
The New Zealand Government offers the following scholarships to candidates of selected developing countries to undertake study in specific areas identified as relevant to the student's home country:
- New Zealand Pacific Scholarships (NZPS)
- New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS)
- New Zealand ASEAN Scholars awards (for applicants from Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Lao PDR, Burma/Myanmar and Viet Nam)
- Commonwealth Scholarship
- Short Term Training Awards (STTA)
- New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships (NZRDS)

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS)
These scholarships are administered by Education New Zealand and applications close on 15 July each year. Further scholarships are available from their website.
