Summer Pringle

USA

Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

Summer PringleOriginally from California, Summer has just completed her LLB at the University of Canterbury and is currently working as a clerk at a law firm in Christchurch. Summer originally chose to study here as her partner is from New Zealand.

Although she contemplated studying at both the University of Canterbury and Victoria University in Wellington, she chose Canterbury: “I felt that Christchurch suited me more than Wellington because Christchurch is a large city but has a small town feel. Also, living in Christchurch allows me to be close to popular weekend destinations like Queenstown and Nelson”.

Summer spent three fantastic years studying at the University: “I liked that Canterbury wasn't too spread out. It was easy if you had to get from one side of the campus to the other. Also, during the long hours that I spent in the law library, it was nice to be able to look out at all of the trees and landscaped campus. I enjoyed watching the seasons change while keeping warm inside the law library. There were always interesting talks and seminars taking place at the UCSA building and yummy coffees from the 101 Cafe were life-savers at times”.

Summer also held the academic staff in high regard as “the law lecturers were extremely knowledgeable in their fields. Most of them had their own textbooks published and were the leading experts in the area of law they taught”.

As Summer had already completed a Science degree in the States she was able to cross-credit some of the courses which meant she completed her Law degree in three years rather than four. And as New Zealand follows the common law legal system, Summer will be able to use her law degree throughout the world although she plans to stay in New Zealand for the present.

Study aside, Summer says: “I really enjoy New Zealand food, particularly Cadbury chocolate and high quality meats. I also like that Christchurch is relatively small and so it is quick and easy to drive or bike from place to place. There is usually a great coffee shop within each suburb so on the weekends it's nice to be able to go for a brisk walk to relax in one”.

Summer is happy to recommend Canterbury to others. She says: “New Zealand is a fantastic place to study. The tuition is very low and the University is close to great shops and the City Centre”.
