Phoon Hooi San
Malaysia
PhD in Speech and Language Therapy
Receipient of a UC Doctoral Scholarship
Phoon has valued the time she has spent at UC. “My supervisors have inspired me with their depth of knowledge in their chosen fields. Lecturers are approachable and open minded and students are encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts and ideas with lecturers and peers.”
Phoon feels that she has benefited in so many ways from her New Zealand education. “I have become independent and flexible in my approach to life and I have improved my critical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills.
She has thoroughly enjoyed her stay in Christchurch. “I liked the slow pace of living, friendly people, multicultural restaurants, unique buildings and breathtaking scenery. There was always something new to experience and explore, such as skiing, rock-climbing, cycling in the forest, swimming with the dolphins and tramping.”
Having now graduated, there are many career options available for her to pursue - either as a speech therapist, a lecturer or alternatively Phoon may continue with her research in a postdoctoral position.
“I highly recommend the University of Canterbury to anyone who intends to undertake postgraduate studies overseas. If you are looking for a world class education and you also want new experiences and a safe and healthy environment, then you should seriously consider UC as your study destination.”
