André Pinkert

Germany

PhD in Chemical and Process Engineering

Andre PinkertAndré spent one year at the University of Canterbury back in 2005 as a Study Abroad student. He’d been studying Chemistry at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany but was keen to experience living and studying somewhere different.

André enjoyed his time at UC so much that he returned and is now completing a PhD in Chemical and Process Engineering: “I still had connections here from my Study Abroad year and there were very interesting research topics available at PhD level and it’s a great place to study if you’re looking for something different from your home country!”

André’s research is currently focused on extracting cellulose from wood for use in bio-composites that may be used in the building industry or for medical applications such as bone and tissue engineering.

As well as conducting his research, André has made the most of opportunities to make new contacts. “Through studying at UC I have made friends from around the globe and have developed connections to universities and companies throughout Australasia. This has been really helpful as I plan to stay in this area and work after I have finished my PhD possibly in the field of Biomedical Engineering.”

Outside of his studies André is enjoying life on campus: “At UC students are treated with courtesy and respect and there are great campus facilities such as the Recreation Centre, cafés and bars and the beautiful University grounds.”

He also enjoys life in New Zealand in general, “It’s really easy to live here with uncomplicated bureaucracy, great food and wine and superb outdoors! And what definitely stands out for me is the great kindness of Kiwis towards foreigners in general.”
