Bachelor of Commerce in Strategy and Entrepreneurship

Studying towards a Graduate Diploma in Management

Business Analyst, Hewlett-Packard

Harry currently works full time at HP (Hewlett-Packard) as well as studying part time at UC. Outside of working and studying, he also plays rugby for Christchurch Football Club and bagpipes for the Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band. This has brought some amazing opportunities for him. ‘I have been able to travel all around New Zealand and have been to the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland five times, placing 9th in 2014,’ he says.

As well as pursuing his musical interests, this New Zealand champion bagpiper is looking forward to gaining management experience and working towards his aim of establishing his own business.

With a passion for business and economics, Harry originally came to UC to study towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Strategy and Entrepreneurship. ‘I found economics and business papers most interesting at school and achieved well in them,’ he explains. ‘I wanted to further my knowledge in these areas, and learn the tools that I would need to be able to pursue my career goals and to help increase my employment and job opportunities.’

Originally from the Canterbury region, Harry found UC to be conveniently located, but ultimately his decision to study here came down to the reputation and credibility of the university.

He would advise people thinking about studying at UC to plan their time here carefully in order to get the most out it.

‘Get a feel for a number of different areas and try to keep your options open,’ he says. ‘One of the things I liked about my undergraduate degree was that it involved and covered so many aspects of commerce and that there were so many different options.’

Studying Commerce at UC allowed Harry to gain real-life perspective on his subjects, which kept study and lectures interesting. ‘I enjoy how many of the courses are related to actual cases and businesses,’ he says.

Harry was employed by HP soon after graduating with his Commerce degree as part of the South Pacific Graduate Development Program as a Business Analyst. His main functions consist of strategy, business development and project management. He plans to transfer overseas with HP after finishing his Graduate Diploma.

Harry is enjoying continuing his studies while working and loves how he can apply the knowledge and theories learnt to help solve real business issues in a multi-national, corporate environment.

Harry is still enjoying the student experience and the social environment at UC. ‘I love the atmosphere at UC – everyone is friendly and there are great resources, world-class lecturers and great advisors available to you. There is also always something to do when you are not studying – lots of concerts, barbecues and parties.’
