English language and foundation studies

If you don’t meet the academic or English language requirements, our partner organisations offer several programmes to get you ready to study at UC.

English for Academic Purposes – Pathway to UC

The Christchurch College of English Ltd provides English for Academic Purposes – Pathway to UC for the University. If you are an international student or permanent resident and have narrowly missed the English language requirements, this 12 week programme is for you. Once you successfully complete it, you are eligible to apply for entry to 100-level courses at UC. Find out more about the English for Academic Purposes – Pathway to UC.

Foundation Studies Certificate

The University of Canterbury International College (UCIC) provides the Foundation Studies Certificate for the University. The Foundation Studies Certificate is a 26 week full-time programme which covers English language and academic skills. This course is for you if you are an international student who wants to improve your English skills, understand New Zealand culture and understand what is expected from you at university.

When you have successfully completed the Foundation Studies certificate, you can move on to either a degree at UC or a University Transfer Programme at UCIC, depending upon your grades. See UCIC Course Information for details.

University Transfer Programme

The University of Canterbury International College (UCIC) offers University Transfer Programmes on the UC campus and UC moderates them to ensure the highest academic quality. If you need to bridge the gap between previous study and undergraduate study, UTPs could be suitable. UTPs allow you to transfer directly into the second year of a bachelor's degree at UC.
