Eligibility to apply

You’re eligible to live in UC student accommodation if you are a student or future student of:

  • UC
  • Another tertiary institution in Christchurch (please note that as preference is given to students intending to study at UC, your application will be placed on hold.  We will keep you updated on the status of your application).  Internet is through SNAP wired and SNAP wireless on a pay as you go account that you will need to set up on arrival.

Under 18 international students must stay in a fully-catered hall of residence to comply with the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. Homestay and private board is preferred.  Students can also stay with a designated caregiver.

There are two steps to the application process for most students.  Check the reference requirements for the hall you are applying to under "Step 2".

Step 1. Apply online

Which halls can I apply to?  Our handy Which Hall Flow Chart can help guide you to appropriate options depending on your age and level of study.

After you have considered your options and decided on your preferred hall you need to complete an online application.

PLEASE NOTE:  New applications for all NZ Citizens and Holders of a NZ Residence Class Visa or Australian Citizens/Permanent Residents for 2018 will be required to pay an application fee of NZ$100 (including GST).  This fee is not applicable to international students or returning residents.

To fill out the form, you will need:

  • The name, address and contact details of two emergency contacts
  • Your hall preferences - you are required to select your 1st, 2nd and 3rd preference so think carefully about your choices
  • Your preferred course of study
  • Education and examination information
  • Information on any cultural interests and involvements over the last two years
  • Information on any community service involvements over the last two years
  • Sporting interests and involvements
  • Positions of responsibility or leadership experience
  • Person description
  • Paragraph on how you expect to contribute to the life of the hall
  • Credit/Debit Card (preferred) or bank transfer account details

For more information on filling out the form, we've prepared a guide: How to complete an online application form

The online application will take about 15-30 minutes to complete. The first part is a registration, which once completed, will email you a username and password that will enable you to save and come back to your application if you need to.  Please note that once you click "Save and Continue" at the end of a page, you are able to go back and edit that page but once you have accepted the "Declaration and Consent" page at the end of your application, any changes will need to be made by Accommodation Services.  Please email Accommodation Services with your changes.

You can also use your username and password to Check the status of your application ‌once you have submitted it.

Step 2. Provide a reference

After you have completed the online application form, you will also need a referee to provide a reference.  See below for the requirement that applies to you or view our Step 2 Flow Chart:

Under 18 international students

Under 18 international students must stay in a fully-catered hall of residence to comply with the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. Homestay or with a designated caregiver is preferred.

Bishop Julius Hall, College House, Rochester and Rutherford Hall, University Hall, or Waitākiri Village

A fully-catered hall is typically best suited to a school leaver - you will need to arrange for your school to complete an online Common Confidential Reference Form on your behalf.  You can start this process by completing your part at NZCCRF Student Registration for Accommodation References form. If you are unable to provide a Common Confidential Reference Form, contact Accommodation Services

For students currently not living in New Zealand, a school testimonial is acceptable.

Ilam Apartments, Sonoda Christchurch Campus, or Waimairi Village

NZ Domestic/Holders of a NZ Residence Class Visa or Australian Citizen-Permanent Resident under 20

Arrange for your school to complete an online Common Confidential Reference Form on your behalf.  You can start this process by completing your part at NZCCRF Student Registration for Accommodation References form. If you are unable to provide a Common Confidential Reference Form, contact Accommodation Services.

For students currently not living in New Zealand, a school testimonial is acceptable.

NZ Domestic/Holders of a NZ Residence Class Visa or Australian Citizen-Permanent Resident 20 and Over

Arrange for a character reference to be completed and emailed to Accommodation Services on your behalf. An appropriate referee would be an employer, landlord, lecturer/tutor or minister - someone who knows you well but is not a friend or family member.

International students 18 or over

No reference is required. Email Accommodation Services to let us know when you have completed your online application.

If you are on an approved Study Abroad or Exchange programme, or are an NZAID Scholarship student, tell us in your email.

Next steps

Making an application does not guarantee you a place in a hall of residence. Most halls undergo a selection process. Halls aim to select students from various backgrounds and abilities to establish a well-rounded student community within the hall.

The hall of residence will contact you with the outcome of your application by email. All offers and wait list offers will be made on Friday 6 October.

If you do not receive an offer of place, a hall may offer you a place on their wait list. You can not choose to be on a wait list. You need to decide if you want to go on the wait list or be considered by another hall. Decide as quickly as possible and contact the hall to inform them of your choice.

If you are not successful in your preferred hall, your application will be forwarded to the next available hall you have selected in your online application.  In the event that all options you have selected are full, you have the option for your application to be automatically sent to a hall with available places. Your consent to do this is asked for in the Declaration and Consent section at the end of the online application form.

Accept your offer

Once you have an offer you want to accept you need to confirm your place. You must:

  1. Complete and return your contract by the due date
  2. Pay the required deposit as specified in the offer (this amount varies from hall to hall)

If you do not return your contract by the due date, your contract will expire and your place will be offered to another student.

If you are paying for accommodation through a scholarship, please contact your hall to discuss payment options.

Returning resident

If you are currently staying in a hall of residence you are a returning resident. If you want to go back to stay in the same accommodation, contact the hall or village directly.

If you want to apply for a self-catered apartment find out more at www.ucastudentvillage.co.nz.
