HERITAGE WEEK 2017: CITY OF CYCLES

The Teece Museum and UC Classics are taking part in the Arts Centre's 'City of Cycles' event on Sunday 15th October as part of Heritage Week 2017. Our programme for the day includes a series of free public talks in the lovely Recital Room. The first talk for the day is:

Dr Patrick O’Sullivan, 'On Becoming a Man: Heroic Journeys in Greek Mythology'

From Perseus, to Jason and the Argonauts to Homer’s Odyssey, Greek myths are full of journeys to far flung places in the Greek cultural imagination. This talk by Dr Patrick O'Sullivan looks at the hero’s journey in its literal and figurative senses: not only do heroes display great strength and courage against a range of monstrous, non-Greek opponents, they also frequently embody qualities of cunning, endurance and outrageous daring. Some figures embody these qualities successfully, others take them too far, bringing disaster down on themselves or those around them.
