Dear Staff and Students,

We are fortunate indeed in having two notable international academics to present our first and second Department of Management seminars this term – and both in the same week! So make diary notes to attend now.

Have you ever wondered whether people really ‘fit’ in particular organisations? If there’s a misfit, it may mean psychological and physical stress, reduced effectiveness and personal and organisational trauma. Prof. Véronique Ambrosini, traces the evolution of her own high-impact research to show how resource-based and strategy as practice views increase our understanding of contemporary issues of organisational performance including whether tacit knowledge can ever really be a good source of competitive advantage for firms.

Véronique is a Council Member of the British Academy of Management and Editor/ Associate Editor and Editorial Board member of prominent management journals. Véronique is extremely knowledgeable about publishing in her respective field and will offer insights into research of considerable benefit to both staff and students alike.

Professor Véronique Ambrosini, Monash University, presents Towards a Better Understanding of Sources of Competitive Advantage: A Research Trajectory

I will trace in this seminar my research path. I will discuss how, taking a resource based view of the firm and strategy as practice perspective, I have developed a research agenda based on better understanding firm performance. I will present the research questions I have been working on. These include: Can tacit knowledge be a source of advantage? What are the implications of causal ambiguity on value creation? How can firms renew their resource base?

The aim of this seminar is not only to share my contributions to the strategic management literature but also to discuss the challenges and tribulations of publishing.

Véronique Ambrosini is a Professor of Management (Strategic Management) at Monash University. She is the Monash international business and strategic management discipline group leader. She was previously a Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Birmingham and at Cardiff University.

Her research is conducted essentially within the resource-based and dynamic capability view of the firm. She has articles published in internationally recognized journals such as the Journal of Management Studies, British Journal of Management or Human Relations.

Véronique is an associate editor of the British Journal of Management and of the Journal of Management & Organization and sits on several editorial boards.
