Associate Professor Ken Henshall of the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics examines Japanese naturalist literature and the Western influences on it.
For many years Japanese naturalism was believed to be a failed attempt to imitate Zola, but this presentation makes it clear that in fact it was based primarily on German naturalism, which advocated freedom of the natural individual.
