PhD and Masters thesis students: additional fees and costs information
PhD students will be given a specific start date from the Dean of Postgraduate Research.
Masters thesis students will be given a specific start date from their department, and fees will be payable from that individual start date for a 52-week enrolment period each year.
Part Time Thesis Enrolments
Students who apply for and are granted 'part-time' thesis enrolments under the regulations pay 65% of the full-time fee
Quarterly Enrolment
PhD and Masters thesis students who have completed the minimum required period of enrolment and all required course work may request enrolment for 3, 6 or 9 months if the student and their supervisor consider that the final submission will be completed within that period.
To be eligible for quarterly enrolment student needs to provide an email from their Supervisor of Studies to thesis-enrolment@canterbury.ac.nz confirming the expected date of submission.
Tuition fees will be pro-rated to the duration of quarterly enrolment.
Grace Period
The University of Canterbury gives thesis students one month’s grace for tuition fees only at the end of the enrolment period.
Academic deadlines for submission still apply.
Grace period is for one month following the end date of the student’s official enrolment period unless officially extended with approval of the Dean of Postgraduate Research
Thesis Submission and Fees
- Students must be fully enrolled and have paid the required fees to present their thesis.
- Students cannot apply for a student loan retrospectively to pay these fees once the thesis has been completed.
- Students may be granted an extension of time to submit a thesis. This extension is an academic permission to continue work on the thesis, it does not waive the requirement to enrol and pay the appropriate fee.
Refunds
PhD and Masters thesis students who have
- Completed the minimum period of enrolment ; and
- Completed the required thesis and course work; and
- Re-enrolled to complete the research submission
may be entitled to a refund of tuition fees paid for the period following the end of the month in which the final submission was presented for examination.
