Canterbury Pasifika Project

This project aims to strengthen quality in Early Childhood Education and raise responsiveness to the community through focusing on Pasifika children, their parents, families and communities, and the importance of their identities, languages and cultures. It aims to create strong foundations for Pasifika children to ensure greater success and participation in quality early learning opportunities.

Inspirational Fono (Meetings)

As part of this project UC Education Plus hosted members of early learning centres and their communities, and new entrant teachers for a day of learning at the Inspirational Fono.

These meetings aimed to strengthen:

  • early learning opportunities for children
  • inclusive practices
  • transitions to early primary school
  • partnerships and networks supporting this vision.

Leading the fono was a team from UC Education Plus and the College of Education, Health and Human Development, including Dr Lesieli Tongati'o, Leali'ie'e Tufulasi Taleni, Lynda Boyd and Jo Togiaso.

These fono were followed by the UC team providing intensive PLD support to identified centres. The project will hold a grand final fono, expected to be in May/June to celebrate the services’ progress.

The PLD is offered through the Ministry funded Strengthening Early Learning Opportunities (SELO) contract, in conjunction with University of Canterbury, UC Education Plus and Ngāi Tahu through Te Tapuae o Rēhua.
