About us

measureName of the Centre/ Te Ingoa o Te Ao Tamariki
The name ‘Te Ao Tamariki’ means the children's world.  The centre was established in June 1991 and is a purpose-built full day childcare centre on the College of Education campus for the use of staff and Students from the University of Canterbury. The multi-cultural centre is also available to the wider community.

Aims/ Ngā Whāīnga
The aim of Te Ao Tamariki is to provide early childhood care and education in a warm, secure environment that works in partnership with parents and whānau.

We work to encourage non-racist, non-sexist play attitudes and relationships within the centre.  Te Ao Tamariki provides a self-choice, child centred programme that values the unique and individual development of your child, while ensuring an effective curriculum with meaningful use of Te Whāriki, The Early Childhood Curriculum.

We seek to achieve equitable care for all children of all religions, ethnic, cultural, social, family and whānau backgrounds.  Our teachers will express sensitivity to each child’s cultural differences at all times by acknowledging and respecting differences.
