Postgraduate Diploma in Education endorsed in Leadership PGDipEd
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education is designed to provide opportunities to improve professional practice and examine critically significant issues in education. Students may proceed to the Master of Education.
Leadership endorsement
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education endorsed in Leadership focuses on the competencies required for effective leadership and management. It is suitable for those already holding leadership and management positions in schools and centres and for those planning future promotion, particularly aspiring principals and head teachers.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be approved as a candidate for the diploma by the Dean of Education, and have either:
(a) qualified for any appropriate degree in New Zealand with at least 0.45 EFTS at 300-level in Education; or
(b) qualified for any appropriate degree in New Zealand and either;
i. successfully completed a recognised teacher training course of not less than one year at a New Zealand college of education or university;
ii. or acquired experience as a teacher in a recognised educational institution or setting;
iii. acquired experience as a counsellor in a recognised counselling setting;
iv. acquired appropriate experience as an educator in a work-place or community setting;
v satisfied the conditions for admission to the diploma endorsed in leadership; or
vi. completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Education; or(c) been admitted Admission Ad Eundem Statum.
The relevance and standard of undergraduate studies and any subsequent professional work experience are the main criteria of approval. Students will normally be expected to have at least a B average in their 300-level courses.
To be admitted to the diploma endorsed in Leadership a candidate must have an appropriate degree, a minimum one-year teacher training course, and have normally completed five years teaching service and hold a position with leadership responsibility.

One year full-time, up to four years part-time.
Courses
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education endorsed in Leadership comprises a total of 120 points:
And any one of:
- EDEM 637 Teachers Sharing Expertise
- EDEM 638 Curriculum Leadership
- EDEM 639 Leadership for School and Centre Improvement
And an additional 30 points from the Master of Education schedule.
A candidate wishing to enrol in a thesis for the Master of Education following the award of this diploma should note that completing 0.25 EFTS (30 points) of approved research methodology courses will normally be required.
